BLACKED OUT
The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive style guide for a campaign of our choosing. My response was to create BLACKED OUT, a campaign focused on celebrating African American contributions to culture, history, and society while also addressing how these achievements are often overlooked or left unrecognized. The campaign's goal is to uplift and educate by highlighting the lasting influence of Black creativity across areas such as music, fashion, language, and art. The name BLACKED OUT was chosen to reflect the idea of contributions being obscured from mainstream recognition while also serving as a call to bring those achievements into the spotlight. Throughout the design process, I established a bold visual identity through vibrant colors, strong typography, and jagged illustrative forms that communicate energy, resilience, and unbridled creativity. Elements such as audio waves, music notes, and braid-inspired patterns were incorporated to reference important aspects of African American culture and artistic expression. One challenge was creating a visual system that felt both celebratory and eye-catching without becoming visually overwhelming. I addressed this by developing clear standards for logo usage, typography, color palettes, and imagery to maintain consistency across all applications. The final product is a dynamic style guide that provides a cohesive foundation for the BLACKED OUT campaign while reinforcing its mission of honoring, recognizing, and amplifying African American voices and achievements.
