Andres Lab Logo

The purpose of this project was to create a logo for the Illinois State University’s Andres Lab, a research lab dedicated to studying and conserving freshwater ecosystems and aquatic biodiversity. The design needed to visually communicate both the lab's scientific focus and its commitment to understanding the impacts of environmental change on aquatic life. To achieve this, imagery of DNA strands was combined with fish and other aquatic elements, representing the lab's use of molecular techniques to study biodiversity, population genetics, and aquatic species. The flowing wave shape was split into 3 separate parts with 3 distinct shades of blue to add dimensionality to the piece and avoid it looking flat. Additionally, the cool blue color palette reinforces themes of water, conservation, and environmental research. One Issue was balancing scientific concepts with a clean and approachable design. By simplifying complex biological imagery into clear, recognizable forms, the logo created is one that is both professional and visually engaging.
